EPISODES

Travis appeared in five series one episodes : Seek-Locate-Destroy (A6), Duel (A8), Project Avalon (A9), Deliverance (A12) and Orac (A13). Here are brief summaries of Travis' plotline in each.

seek - locate - destroy Seek-Locate-Destroy quotes

Travis is first introduced, and assigned to seek, locate and destroy Blake. He uses a captured Cally as bait to snare Blake, knowing Blake will try to rescue her. However Blake turns the tables and uses one of Travis' old tricks, showing up a long time before anyone expected and outwitting Travis. In the fight, Travis' robotic hand is damaged. He swears he will catch Blake, and find him wherever he runs to.

duel Duel quotes

Travis has almost captured the Liberator when a forcefield freezes both ships, and Blake and Travis are taken down to the planet below to fight a duel to the death. They each are given one companion, Jenna with Blake, and Travis' mutoid pilot. The lesson they are supposed to be learning is twofold - the death of an enemy, and the death of a friend. Travis is disdainful and sets out to trap Blake, however his plan goes awry when the mutoid, low on blood serum, cannot react as fast. Blake has the opportunity to kill Travis but stops himself, explaining later that he would have enjoyed it.

project avalon Project Avalon quotes

Travis has come up with what he believes to be a foolproof (if incredibly expensive) plan to kill Blake and his crew, and capture the Liberator. They key is Avalon, the resistance leader, who Travis captures and has a perfect android replica made of her. When Blake and co. rescue her, it turns out to be the android, armed with a deadly virus. They manage to overpower and reprogram her, and Blake takes her back down to exchange for the real Avalon. Servalan orders Avalon to be brought to Blake, for fear that the android will drop the viral phial on an unknown trigger word or movement. As Blake and Avalon teleport up, Travis moved towards the android to try and take the phial, and manages to catch it just before it hits the floor. He then collapses in rage and despair, as this was his make or break chance. Servalan tells him he has lost his rank and command and will face a court of inquiry, before she sweeps icily away.

deliverance Deliverance quotes

A subdued Travis is summoned by Servalan, and given the chance to go after Blake once again. It is part of Servalan's plan to capture Orac, an incredibly advanced supercomputer. She has used the man who saved Travis' life, Maryatt, as hostage bait and had him killed by sabotaging the ship he was in. Travis is visibly affected by the news, but his obsession with Blake overrides any feelings he has and he steels himself to carry out Servalan's plan.

orac Orac quotes

Travis accompanies Servalan to Aristo, to find Orac. To reach Ensor's base, they must travel through underground tunnels, and Travis seems gratified at Servalan's fear of the Phibians - a small revenge for him. He is once again thwarted in his attempt to kill Blake, when Avon and Vila teleport down and Avon shoots Travis' mechanical hand (and claims he was aiming for his head).

conclusions

Travis is a military man through and through, and will do his duty even if it means his own death. He can kill without remorse, and can be overzealous and ruthless when dealing with insurrection. He is fiercely loyal to the Federation, and when they ultimately turn on him and take away the bedrock of his world, it threatens what sanity he has left. His obsession with Blake drives him relentlessly, it becomes more and more his purpose in life to get Blake. He finds it difficult to have friendship with anyone, we are aware that he did have friends such as Maryatt, and probably Keyeira, but they were all taken away from him in one way or another. Underneath his brusque exterior, he appears to be lonely, although he rarely gives any hint out to anyone. Although the loneliness is essentially of his own making, he is still human, and it does sometimes get to him. He is increasingly able to brush everything aside though, and focus on Blake, even if it means steeling himself to the death of a friend. All these factors contribute to his eventual desperate acts towards the end of series two. Overall I find Travis, especially series one Travis, fascinating, as he makes an excellent villain whose flaws are all too apparent. Stephen Greif portrays Travis' inner struggles and outer reactions superbly.
